It was soon clear to Rogers, that his “assignment” of crime scene witnesses was clearly Mikey’s way of putting him in his place, a choice Rogers could actually identify with, but he understood pretty quickly that nothing would come of it. Katya and Leena were still emotional, but under control enough to re-describe exactly what they saw (not much). Both had seen the horrifying sights and fled. Neither (or at least so they said) had approached the victims, touched anything, moved anything or would have any idea if something was missing.

Of course, now that Rogers really understood that both women had far more access to both apartments than he had been aware of, it was certainly possible, that cash, especially if the Rothensteins left jewelry and money piled up here and there, or at least, Coco did, could be missing but only Rebecca, most likely, or LePorte might know how much.

Since he had promised Oscar, his questioning of Leena had to be very careful. Katya was acting a little strangely, avoiding eye contact, wringing her hands, and blinking a lot, which he knew could be nerves, the memories of Russian interrogations or lying.

“I only look for a minute, then I run to the other apartment and then I run to help Leena. I only wanted to get out! I was so afraid someone was still there! I clean every day. But I don’t see anything. I, I see the you know, from the women. used towels and the sheets and things, every day, but I only put in the laundry room, but Mrs. Diaz does.

“Mrs. Diaz, she would know, if she looked. But she hasn’t been here since the day before, so, I don’t know. I am sick from this. I want to go home, please!”

Something was off with her, but he knew nothing more would come of keeping her there, so he waited while she gave motherly comfort to Leena and let her leave. Leena was calm now, probably the result of the medication the hospital sent her home with and he decided it was worth a shot to talk to her alone.

“Leena, let’s go sit somewhere quiet for a minute, so we can talk without you having to be in this room.”

She nodded, sighing with relief. “I’ve only been in the kitchen and the dog’s room and here and Mr. Rothenstein’s study, a couple of times, I really don’t know the apartment very well.”

Rogers could feel his eyebrows raise slightly. “How about the outside by the pool?” He waited for any reaction. She seemed surprised by the suggestion, but not suspicious.

“Sure. It’s so pretty out there. I look out, sometime.” She led him to the enormous French doors leading out from the Great Room to the vast terrace and they instinctively sat at the giant white marble table facing the ocean.

Rogers could almost connect with how being around all this magical kingdom unreal world these people took for granted could infect anyone susceptible. Why was he so immune
